The first session of the day was kicked off by Mitchell Player Jr, who has created an app titled 1921 that will help people find and support black-owned businesses. He said three of the most important focuses of the app was to ensure it brings awareness, convenience and usability to those using it.

International Living: Working and Living in Another Country as American Citizens

These presenters shared their journey about living abroad, working in industry space, the benefits and joys of traveling globally and embracing true diversity without even talking
about it.

Workforce Transition: Making the Transition from Employee to Employer

Kristina Dove and Timothy Scott led a discussion focused on Making the Transition from Employee to Employer. They discussed helpful tips, such as preparing a 6-month plan and saving money for operating capital in the slower months, leaving your employer in good standing, and sharing their take on potential obstacles of entrepreneurship and how to overcome them.

Business Opportunities within the Sharing Economy: Airbnb & Turo Rentals

Memphis residents John Oloo and Tyranese Dandridge presented on Business Opportunities within the Sharing Economy: Airbnb & Turo Rentals. They shared the most important thing when getting started with Airbnb is to know the city laws and licenses needed. Once that is determined, research the market, plan your budget and develop your niche. Turo is a peer-to-peer car sharing
market and they gave recommendations on how to be successful
in that space.

 

Speakers: Ruth Burton, Oasis Center, and Charles Thornton, Amazon
Career Readiness: Preparing for the Workplace

Thornton presented info about Amazon hiring practices. He shared that possibilities are endless with Amazon. There are a lot of open positions to be filled and they offer opportunities for everyone. Burton shared about what employers are looking for in employees and explored what makes a potential employee the ideal candidate. 

 

Speaker: Frances Smith-Dean, Executive Director for the ZWHJCOC, and owner of The Financial Educator
Preparing for the 4th Industrial Revolution and Group Economics

Smith-Dean explained the 4th industrial revolution is AI, big data, robots and more. This new economy is tied to technology. She explains why Americans should focus on becoming global citizens, business owners and investors when preparing for the future.

We didn’t want the Juneteenth fun to stop, so we wanted to share more Juneteenth Economic Forum Bonus Content for you. ZWHJCOC Executive Director Frances Smith-Dean interviewed educators Dea Nunnally and Josetta Shipps about living and working abroad as American citizens. The women share from their experience and provide tips of what you need to consider before traveling: 

Dea Nunnally is a dynamic, self-motivated educator with wide-ranging teaching and administrative experience. Her educational background includes a Masters in Teaching as well as a Masters in English. She started teaching in China in the fall of 2017, her first international experience, and enjoys the growth opportunity that living in a vibrant Chinese community provides. 

Josetta M. Shipps, originally from Springfield, Missouri, taught as an elementary teacher for over 15 years. She received a Bachelor’s of Arts in Business Administration, with a minor in Music and earned her Master’s degree in the area of Interdisciplinary Studies.
